a.s.r. real estate acquires battery for energy storage at Strekdammen Wind Farm

a.s.r. real estate has acquired a majority stake, on behalf of the ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I, in a battery storage facility at Strekdammen Wind Farm. The battery storage facility, also known as a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enables generated energy to be stored and supplied when required. The battery will be connected to wind farm Strekdammen in Eemshaven, Groningen, which is owned by the ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I.

With this investment, the renewable energy fund of a.s.r. real estate contributes to enhancing the flexibility of the Dutch electricity grid. The ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I has taken a majority interest in the battery storage facility. The remaining shares remain in the hands of Rebel Development and Pronewable, both of which will continue to commit to the operation of the facility.

The battery storage facility has a power capacity of 7.5 MW and a storage capacity of approximately 24 MWh. This allows the installation to store or deliver electricity for more than three hours, equivalent to approximately 11,700 MWh on an annual basis. This corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 5,200 households.

Dick van den Oever, Fund Director of the ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I: “In an energy system that is becoming increasingly dependent on weather conditions, this battery storage facility provides the necessary flexibility. The installation stores energy when wind levels are high and feeds electricity back into the grid during periods of scarcity, helping to keep the electricity grid balanced and ensuring that more generated energy can be effectively utilised. With this investment, we are not only providing additional flexibility to the energy grid, but also strengthening the diversification of our portfolio. While our current portfolio primarily consists of wind and solar farms, we regard batteries as an important sub-asset class through which we further optimise the composition of the fund.”

The ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I is an impact fund. This acquisition aligns with the fund’s impact objectives and the EU Taxonomy. Construction of the battery will commence in February 2026. The battery is expected to become operational in February 2027.
